Hello strangers! I was sorta nudged by BS blog follower and friend "theLydiaT" (who is sportin' some new Big Sandy inspired ink!) to reactivate this here blog. So, here I am after a four month absence...

Two Fly-Rite shows this weekend, beginning tonight (Friday Feb. 4th) at The Redwood Bar in downtown Los Angeles. DJ Dan Moses will be filling the gaps with the music that moves... but we will be going at it alone tonight. That means two LONG sets from me and the boys... and more fun for all! Bring along your request list and get ready for some surprises!

Tomorrow night (Saturday, Feb. 5th) we'll be returning to the Juke Joint in my home town of Anaheim, CA. We haven't played the ol' JJ in a while and it looks like it's gonna be quite an affair! Joining us will be Buzz Campbell, Johnny Bowler, The Hot Rod Trio, and The Jackpot Club!

I'll be tippin' on in a little more often here on this page, and hope to be posting a little bit more than just gig updates... so stay tuned!

We haven't played at Fortune Valley Casino since the town has gone 24 hours, so we're looking forward to seeing what new lows we can sink to on this upcoming three night stand! ;-) Oh... and it's FREE, by the way.

Big Sandy and Boys to hit Italy, Chicago, Clevland, NYC and more!

Over the last 20 years, the Fly-Rite Boys and I have been fortunate enough to have toured quite extensively throughout Europe.... more times than I can remember, actually. But throughout the many thousands of kilometers we've logged there, we've never had the opportunity to venture over to The Boot, Lo Stivale.... Italy! Well, finally, I'll be able to put a check mark next to the name of the country that's been on the top of my places-to-visit list for years! Today I'll be leaving for Senigallia, IT to spend 10 glorious days at the 10th annual Summer Jamboree festival, where I'll be performing once with The Fly-Rite Boys, singing with Abbey Town Jazz Orchestra, and celebrating my 45th birthday with the help of Kim Lenz & the Jaguars AND Kitty, Daisy & Lewis! There are so many great bands and artists that are going to be there.... it's really mind-boggling. Just got back from a quick northerly jaunt up to Concord, Reno, and Sacramento, and whadda ya know? It's time to hop on Interstate 5 once again as we head out tonight for Kenmore WA, Portland OR, and Seattle WA. Howdy friends! Seems like it's been a while since I've checked in with y'all! Over the last few weeks we've been rehearsing overtime, working to get ol' Jeff West back into the groove of things on the bass fiddle. As many of you know, Jeff had difficulties with his left hand and arm last year which lead to an operation and left him out of commission for several months. During that time, we were lucky enough to acquire the services of one Mr. Kevin Stewart... who, by the way, did an incredible job of filling the spot while bringing his own style and flair to the picture. On that note... I'd like to thank Kevin for all the time he put into helping us out! Thanks bub!

And the beat goes on...
Rehearsals have been going really well and we're itching to let it show this Saturday night (July 18th) at The Olivas Adobe in Ventura, CA. For those of you who dig a bit of Califor-ni-yay history, this authentic 1847 adobe hacienda is well worth checking out. We played this event ("Music Under The Stars") last year... and I'm not exaggerating by saying that it was a magical experience. Ok, ok... maybe it was the tequila, but this is a perfect spot to take in some fine music (if I do say so myself) while wining and dining as the sun sets beneath the California skies.

Let me tell ya, there's an all-day event going on this weekend down in San Diego County - in the city of Ramona - that you might not have heard about... but that is definitely worth the drive!

We rarely get the chance to share the stage with our pals The Moonlight Cruisers, so we are really looking forward to hooking up with them - along with Will & the High Rollers, Sharp Al & the Two-Tone Three, Floyd Burney & the Ship Shapers, and The Rumblers - tomorrow at The Rockabilly Shindig. There's car show and BBQ that starts at noon... then the musical mayhem begins indoors at 5:00.

We just got word today that our NYE show with Wayne Hancock at Safari Sam's in downtown LA has been canceled! Apparently there was an indecent at a Hip Hop show there the other night and the cops shut 'em down (there are other factors as well, but let's just say that we won't be doing business with Mr. Sam any more).

It's been a busy day of scrambling around... I was hoping to find another venue for Wayne and I to relocate to together, but due to finances and the lack of time for promotion, it looks like we are going to have to split up the bill. After getting the word that Wayne was able to land a show at bar in LA, we decided to hunt for an OC location for ourselves, so as not to go up against his show.

So, then... it is with great pleasure and a huge sigh of relief that I announce that The Tropics Lounge has saved the day (and our night)! Man, I'm actually excited about this now... it's closer to home, it's cheaper (10 bucks), there'll be food, and we get to play longer. Bring your rod, your ol' lady, and we'll ALL have a BALL!

While there are none that I know of here in Anaheim, San Diego is the home of at least two swingin' Hawaiian combo's... Exotiki (who put on a fine show recently at LA's Redwood Bar) and The Cheap Leis. Eight years ago, almost to the day, I popped in on The Cheap Leis during a live radio broadcast performance on "Jumpin' Like Mad" KPOP AM 1360 (RIP). After playing a sweet set of Hawaiian standards and Christmas faves, The C-Leis asked me to join them on this holiday chestnut. Two more Fly-Rite shows for you Southern Califino's (new word) this weekend: Friday night we're tippin' in to The Blue Cafe where we share the stage with openers James & Burke, and Northern 45. I'm not familiar with either of these acts... but, what the hell, let's just say that they are nothing short of amazing and will make this the MUST-SEE show of the year!

All you surf n instro fans take note: Saturday night we are happy to be joined by Finland's Laika & The Cosmonauts at The Bordello in Downtown Los Angle-eez! I haven't seen these astro-cats for, like, light years man.... and I'm looking forward to hearing what they have up their spacesleeves these days. Dig it!

Hello friends and greetings from the Fly-Rite Ranch here in sometimes sunny Southern California. It's been somewhat hectic for us over the last three weeks, with back to back weekenders in Barcelona, Baltimore, and Las Vegas. It's good to be back home and will be doing shows here in The Golden State through the rest of the year. Here's what coming up over the next several days:

We've had a couple of shows with him so far, as witnessed in the clips below, and he's been doing a fantastic job.

Just a little update on what's been going down with me and the boys... and with what's coming up...

Coming up?

Well, going up, really.... as in UP in a hot-air balloon! The City of Irvine's Great Park has been hosting a series of FREE concerts and FREE hot-air balloon rides this Summer and, well, this Friday August 29th it's OUR turn. We will perform on the outdoor stage from 8pm - 9:30pm. That is, of course, after taking a ride up in one of them there contraptions! This holiday weekend, Safari Sam's in Hollywood will be hosting a remarkable three day event featuring some of the finest roots related musicians of our time. Gracing the stage over the weekend will be Dave Alvin, The Knitters, Peter Case, Levi Dexter, Mike Stinson, The Hacienda Brothers... and man, oh, man... so many more. I, Big Sandy along with my Fly-Rite Boys will be proud to be sharing the stage with The Blasters on Monday evening September 1st! The proceeds to this incredible event, and the art auction that will acommpany it, will go towards the medical expenses of a few musician friends, including blues belter Candye Kane and the dearly deeparted Chris Gaffney. I had a hell of a time celebrating my birthday with the Fly-Rites last week in Aspen, Colorado and Salt Lake City, UT. Thanks to all who came out to the shows... and to the many many people from all over the world who sent birthday greetings, comments, emails, and tequila! It may take me a while, but personal thank-you's will be coming your way!

Speaking of Aspen, I just noticed a Youtube video that just surfaced which features highlites of our performance there last week. Now...; there are tons of BS (Big Sandy) clips on the 'Tube, some of which I wish weren't... but this one is quite fun, I think. You can't tell from the clip, but there were thousands of people in the audience that evening, all situated down the length of a ski run (Fanny Hill). A few local kids got up on stage with us and started some dance moves that soon had the entire crowd following along... well, check it out, you'll see...

OK... the weather is much too nice right now here in Southern California.... it's time too head out to the land of the ice and snow. Yup... Wisconsin here we come. Madison to be precise. Then it's Chicago... twice.

Here's the deal... Thursday night we fly into Chi-town (lord willin' n weather permittin') and we'll head straight to the Big C Jamboree at Martyr's to catch The Mezcal Brothers, who are hosting that night. We'll probably get up on stage at some point... but mostly we're looking forward to just hanging out and mixing with the locals.

Friday night, Feb 8th, we hit the stage at The Harmony Bar in Madison, WI. The snow doesn't phase 'em at all out hear and it should be our usual hot n sweaty night there! Come early for dinner...

This Weekend... Sumthin' Differ'nt

No official "Fly-Rite" shows this weekend... but I've got a couple of things going on that you might find interesting and worth checking out...

Friday night I'll heading out to the desert with Fly-Rite drummer Joe Perez where I'll be doing a night of Rockabilly and Country with former Fly-Rites T.K. Smith and Lee Jeffries at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown...!! Pioneertown was built as a movie set in 1946 and really has the feeling of the Old West. Plan to stay overnight with us (there will be some DRANKIN' going on) and check out the sites on Saturday afternoon... perfect! Oh, by the way... for this show we're being billed as "Big Sandy and his Country Cabin Boys", but it's really just some old pals getting together and making some music...

And then... Saturday night I'll have the honor of being your singin' MC up at Safari Sam's in Hollywood where we will be welcoming the amazing Hot Club of Cowtown, local treasures The Lucky Stars, and up-and-coming western swingsters MARTY SMITH and the MOONEYHAMS!!

Merry Christmas everyone... I hope you've all been enjoying the holi-daze!! I'd like to invite you ALL to a special holiday show in Hollywood this Friday night at Safari Sam's where we'll be sharing the bill with some good old friends (Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics, Russell Scott and the Red Hots) and welcoming some new ones (Capt. Jeffrey and the ChumBuckets)!

I'm sending out a special call to everyone out there who used to come see Deke, Russell, and me at The Blue Cafe (every week!) in the early 90's... it'd be great to see you!

Thanks to all who joined us last weekend in Arcadia - it was a ball y'all. This Friday we venture up to San Francisco for our highly anticipated (by me) debut performance at the Red Devil Lounge. Tons of you were there when I had the chance to first visit the RD Lounge earlier in the year with Los Straitjackets... and we're hoping that this one will be just as rockin'. Joining us will be our pals The B-Stars, with their fine brand of honky-tonk and rockabilly.

Also... earlier that afternoon from 3 - 4 PM, I'll be guest DJ'in' on radio station KUSF in San Francisco - 90.3 FM. I'll be spinning some records, strumming a couple of tunes, and talkin' trash... so check it out kiddies!
